Columbia’s Men’s Bugaboot® Plus XTM Omni-Heat Winter Boot Review

2010 Titanium Bugaboot XTM Omni-Tech Winter Boot

Columbia’s low quality replacement to the 2010 Titanium BootIn 2010 Columbia Sportswear had a Titanium Bugaboot XTM Omni-Tech Winter Boot. It was a great boot for the money. It gave you support for your foot and the weight of your photo gear as you carried it on your back to your destination. The boot was also sufficiently insulated to keep you acceptably warm while you stood in place capturing images. Things changed in 2011 and seems to be fairly the same for the 2012/2013 winter season. The boot no longer is a Titanium boot. The nice heavy insulation all around the boot, including on top of your toes has disappeared. It’s been replaced with Columbia’s Omni-Heat. A thin insulation covered with little metallic looking dots that reflect your heat back to you. The boot is also lighter than it’s predecessor. I went out and put my hands on a pair Continue reading

Cold Weather Photography; Keeping your hands warm

Marmot WindStopper Convertible Gloves

One of the greatest challenges in cold weather photography is keeping your hands warm while still being able to operate those tiny little buttons and wheels on your camera. Plenty of large expensive mittens and gloves will keep you warm. Unfortunately they are clumsy and just don’t hack it when it comes time to pressing the shutter button or changing your settings on the fly. The answer is not a simple one. I’ve spent many years exploring various solutions and the best I came up with is a compromise, but an acceptable one! My Solution: I have a multi-part solution. First for the outer shell I use a convertible glove (Also known as a sniper glove in tactical and hunting gear stores) They’re also known as Hybrid or fingerless gloves. I’ve found some fleece ones at Walmart and Target that are just too cheap and flimsy. Marmot makes a good Continue reading

Night Time HDR From the Old to the New

Marché Bonsecours to the Montreal Stock Exchange Tower

Marché Bonsecours to the Montreal Stock Exchange TowerOlder cities like Montreal are a treasure chest of historical buildings that offer a photographer unlimited possibilities. Photographing the beauty of these historical sites for travel and architectural photography presents itself with relative ease in the daytime. Night time is a little different. The abundance of lights meant to dazzle the tourists represent a challenge in contrast with the night time darkness. In the Digital Photography world night time HDR photography techniques help us work around the problem to achieve acceptable results. Compared to Photoshop CS4, CS6 now offers a little more speed and features when creating HDR images. Naturally third party vendors want a piece of your creativity. Unified Color offers HDR EXPOSE 2 for Pro’s and HDR Express 2. NIK software offers HDR Efex Pro™ 2,  and naturally there’s the ever so popular Photomatix by HDRsoft. I wanted to maintain more of a Continue reading

Snow Geese in Fall Migration – Réservoir Beaudet, Victoriaville

Lunar Eclipse of the Goose - by Jocelyne Feizo http://www.pbase.com/jofe

Upwards of 100,000 Snow Geese during Fall Migration in VictoriavilleAlmost everyone within driving distance of Victoriaville, Quebec that’s into birding and Wildlife photography is heading out to Réservoir Beaudet for the fall migration of Snow Geese. Upwards of a hundred thousand Snow Geese can congregate in this quaint little reservoir across the road from the Lactantia Dairy Plant. From passionate birders to the mere curious, all assemble to admire these birds. They’re just about everywhere you look. On the lawn in the water and up in the sky. The Snow Geese feed mostly in neighboring fields devouring the post harvest left overs. Later in the day the Snow Geese return to the reservoir (Réservoir Beaudet) in clouds of hundreds if not over a thousand Geese at a time. They fly in into the late evening hours joining the already large community. This is not to say that the number of geese during the day is at Continue reading

Summer’s Gone! Fall Colors Are In! – Landscape Photography

River at Sunset with Fall Colors

Take Advantage of Fall Colors to Enhance Your Landscape PhotographySummer came and Summer’s Gone! It went by so quickly that all I can seem to think about are the missed opportunities. What did I forget to photograph before the end of Summer? I can’t lament and think about it for too long! Fall may be around for quite a while but in the North East and Southern / Eastern Canada the beauty of fall can be here one week end and gone the next. The foliage is changing and it’s changing at an astonishingly rapid  pace. In Montreal everyone heads North, like St-Donat, an hours drive, for some of the most beautiful colors. Don’t wait for the City colors to kick in because it will be too late to head out North. Fall Colors can be up to three weeks early just a stone drop north of Montreal. For those sleepy heads there’s always the Eastern Continue reading

NEW Photo: Crab Spider added to the Photo Gallery

Crab Spider in a yellow flower petal

Summer 2012 was a good year for Crab SpidersThis year was a lifer as far as Crab Spiders are concerned. For years I kept an eye out for them as they successfully eluded me. This summer I just found them everywhere I looked. Although I was fortunate in finding them I was always less than in the ideal situation to capture a great image. From only having a telephoto lens on me to high wind gusts making the capture a little less successful. Regardless of the conditions I took the pictures and aimed for the best possible results under the circumstances. This one above in the yellow petal was just tiny. The winds were blowing up to 20Mph and the lighting conditions inadequate, The spider was tucked deep in the petal. With only the Micro Nikkor 105m VR I had to get pretty close to get a decent magnification. I was lucky as Continue reading

Portrait of a Juvenile Red Fox

It’s been a while since I had seen this particular trio of Red Fox. I know the days are numbered before they set out to discover new territories. Knowing they’ll be gone soon I just can’t resist taking a great deal of images and posting a few more in my Photo Gallery. Photo Details: This is an other low light image at 800 ISO using a Nikon D300s and a 300mm Nikkor Lens. Natural light portrait, no flash used… For more Red Fox images visit my Mammals Photo Gallery: http://www.trolettiphoto.com/mammals-mammiferes Related articles NEW PHOTO: Juvenile Red Fox on the Prowl

Juvenile Red Fox on the Prowl

There’s always something magical when you encounter a Juvenile Red Fox, especially one you knew when it was just a little kit. This was no exception, as this wonderful Fox is slowly making the transition to adulthood. The interactions are now more aggressive between siblings. They’re approaching the time of year where play will become less important than finding and defending a territory to feed on for winter. This time of year light diminishes fairly quickly in late afternoon. Surrounded by trees it became harder and harder to find a patch of sunlight. I photographed this Fox at 800 ISO using a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 300mm lens providing plenty of light and quick accurate focus for this time of day. Want more Red Fox images?
